The Iset in Western Siberia flows from the Urals through the Sverdlovsk, Kurgan and Tyumen Oblasts into the Tobol. The city of Yekaterinburg stands on the upper reaches of the river. The Iset is 606 kilometres long, and has a drainage basin of 58,900 square kilometres
By convention, the line of demarcation between Western Asia and the European part of the ‘supercontinent’ of Eurasia, is along the Ural Mountain range, the Ural River, the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, and the Turkish Straits.
The dendrological park from Simeria is located in the Hunedoara County on the outskirts of the city. The total area of the park is 70 hectares and is the oldest dendrological park in Romania.

The dendrological park, also called Arboretum, was opened in the middle of the 18th century in a natural forest. Little by little, many species of trees were planted from Europe and around the world. This is the oldest and most valuable collection of exotic and native woody plants in Romania. Numerous tree species have been acclimatized and experienced, rare species from the family of resins, magnolias, bamboo.
Plotinka is the local name for the weir that separates the city pond from the historical park behind. It had been created in 1723 to provide power to the iron works that stood here once and which were the beginning of Yekaterinburg as a city. The man in charge then was Vasily Tatishchev, now considered the ‘City’s Founder’ together with his successor Georg de Gennin. In 1998 a monument to them both had been erected here.
The area arose in the early years of the construction of Yekaterinburg and soon became the central place of trade. In 1745-1747 a wooden Epiphany church was built on the square. In 1771-1774, next to the church on the square, a two-story stone Epiphany Cathedral was built. The square became the center of revolutionary events of the early 20th century. On 1 May 1905, the first political demonstration and rally took place on the square. On 19 October 1905, students and gymnasium students entered the square to discuss the “Highest Manifesto for the Improvement of Public Order”, published by Emperor Nicholas II.
Monument to the keyboard
Keyboard Monument (Russian: Памятник клавиатуре) is an outdoor sculpture featuring the QWERTY/JCUKEN keyboard. It is located in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg alternatively spelt Ekaterinburg and is popular among tourists.
On one side of the monument, you’ll see bas-reliefs of the four Beatles. Head to the other side, and you’ll uncover a depiction of a young man sitting on some stairs, strumming a guitar. This image pays tribute to the many Mongolian youths who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s and were inspired by the iconic group.

n the early morning hours of July 17, 1918, at the height of the Russian Civil War, the imperial royal family of Russia were woken from sleep and told to get dressed. The deposed Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children along with four staff members were ushered into a basement room of the Ipatev House in Yekaterinburg, where they had been kept as prisoners of the state since April. A firing squad entered the room and opened fire.
