ABOUT GIRAAVARU ISLAND
A Unique History
The resort island is known locally as Giraavaru Island (pronounced Gear-ava-roo) and is located in North Malé Atoll just over 25 minutes off Malé International Airport. The capital Island of Malé is vaguely visible from the island.
Giraavaru was seemingly inhabited by the earliest island community of Maldives, thought to be descendants from the ancient Tamil people of the Malabar Coast, presently known as Kerala.
The Giraavaru people had their own distinctive culture and style and until the twentieth century the Giraavaru people displayed recognisable linguistic and cultural differences to the population of the nearby islands. Their folklore heritage has sustained in the forms of songs and dances, however, their custom and cultural specificities quickly assimilated into Malés culture as they were moved to the island of Hulhulé and subsequently Malé in the late 1960s.
